There is simply no live album of this genre and of this era that can compete, perfectly capturing two great nights at what is arguably the greatest rock venue of its era only months before its closing, and also capturing the interplay and honesty of a great rhythm band, only months before the tragic death of its greatest instrumentalist, Duane Allman. That was the musical side of it I shied away from; I didn’t like ‘protest music’ because a lot of it was so simple and unimaginative it stripped the dignity away from the people it was trying to celebrate.

It was nice to make a record that’s more of a jazz album.” Jane put her own emotional stamp on 12 songs from Ella’s repertoire. Nicholas Payton arranged and produced the CD. He plays trumpet on most tracks, plus piano and/or organ on the last two. “We didn’t want to make a kind of record that Ella would have made in the 1950s. We wanted to take what we loved about her and bring it into ‘the now’ with all of the other things we love,” she says. “Nick brought a lot of outside-of-the-genre influences we both really love,” Jane says. “For instance, on his arrangement of ‘I’ve got you Under my Skin,’ the opening groove is very reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.’ The blending of these kinds of things made this a fun project.” They also freshened George Gershwin’s “I Was Doing Alright” with a bit of Amy Winehouse’s “Now You Know” at the end ref.: http://www.parcsetcompagnie.com/?books/alfred-publishing-00-elm-04015-12-contemporary-jazz-etudes. Nor were they seated in restaurants outside of those neighborhoods. In a 1944 New Yorker profile of Duke Ellington, Richard Boyer told of a white St. Louis policeman enthusiastically greeting Duke Ellington after a performance, saying: "If you'd been a white man, Duke, you'd have been a great musician." With his customary regal manner, Duke, smiling coolly, answered, "I guess things would have been different if I'd been a white man." I easily understood the how to create various rhythms. The CD that came with it was super and an excellent learning tool. I'm sure I won't be cutting a CD for a recording studio, but I'm happy.
