Ratherthan living in geographically discrete communities, characterized by a limited range of personal,social and working relationships, we have come to inhabit a global world in which our lives areincreasingly shaped by events that occur, and decisions that are made, at a great distance fromus. Edward Luttwak and Michael Lind moved to the left; Peter Berger and, for a while, Jeanne Kirkpatrick rediscovered their realism; some neocons distinguished between defending American superiority and assuming the burdens of a Pax Americana.
This has impacted our society in a great way. In the USA in the 1970s and 1980s, the principal threat wasperceived as world communism and specifically the Soviet Union, viewed by Ronald Reagan as‘an evil empire’. For the first time, people of all classes came together not to persuade others, but to agree among themselves. It becomes natural to co-ordinate individual efforts and national production with little regard for the human person (planning); natural also to impose or permit medical practices for the health of the community (water fluoridation, compulsory X-Rays and vaccinations); natural to "improve" the community by birth-control and euthanasia, or artificial insemination and human sterilisation, etc.
Fascism denies that numbers, as such, can be the determining factor in human society; it denies the right of numbers to govern by means of periodic consultations; it asserts the irremediable and fertile and beneficent inequality of men who cannot be leveled by any such mechanical and extrinsic device as universal suffrage. In the minds of most of those who share an outlook, it does not form a consistent system focused on one central theme, principle, value, or symbol.
